Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8E VR vs Canon 24-70mm f/2.8L II. Last year I had a chance to test the Canon 24-70mm f/2.8L II on a number of different camera bodies, including the Canon 5DS. To my surprise, Canon’s updated 24-70mm f/2.8L II lacked the resolving power to be able to show all the details in the extreme corners.
The Sigma is heavier hand uses a bigger filter, but to my eyes the difference in output between a Sigma and a Canon L is pretty damned minimal, with the substantial cost saving being the deciding factor for me. I have Sigma's 18 - 35, 24-70 Art, 50 1.4 Art and an a slightly older 70-200 2.8. Sigma lenses are universally heavier than everybody
Sharpness alone does not make a good lens. Bokeh quality, not just quantity come into play as does sunstars, contrast rendering, and flare resistance. The 28-70 combined with those and f/2 access makes for dramatic shots. The sort of shots I got from the EF 24-70 f/2.8L II on a 5D III (my favorite color renderer) come to mind but having f/2.
The Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 DG OS HSM Art is available in Nikon F, Canon EF and Sigma SA mounts. It replaces the ten-year old Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 EX DG HSM and at $1420 / £1149 is a more affordable alternative to the Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM ($2607 / £2109) and Nikon AF-S 24-70mm f/2.8E ED VR ($2594 / £2099).
Compared to our previous test of the Canon 24-70mm 2.8 II test on a camera with a full frame sensor is entirely as expected, the distortion on a camera with an APS-C sensor now lower. Lenses often deform more at the edges and a Canon 650D use only the center of the image. Only with a focal length of 24mm, there is visible barrel distortion.
